Morning Keynote Speaker on Civic Engagement:
The honorable Harris Wofford held an instrumental role in developing the concept and formation of non-military National Service from Peace Corps in the 60s to AmeriCorps in the 90s. Wofford is a former United States senator from Pennsylvania, co-founded America’s Promise with Colin Powell, studied under Gandhi, was a friend and personal advisor to Martin Luther King, Jr., and an advisor to President Kennedy and Robert Kennedy. He has also served under or advised U.S. presidents Lyndon B. Johnson, George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton. His inspiring message will change the way your community engages its youth, develops civic leadership and solidifies its workforce.
9:30 a.m. Morning Address on Community Sustainability:
Kennedy Lawson Smith is a strong economist and is one of the nation’s foremost experts on both commercial district revitalization and main street economics. Ms. Smith will explore the challenges and potential benefits of environmentally friendly community development practices and will share emerging trends in environmentally based community development from industrial ecology to eco-cemeteries, as well as the need for leadership in shifting Americans’ development paradigm.

Session 1
Green Streets:
Geoffrey Anderson, CEO and president of Smart Growth America, will speak on the synergies of smart growth and economic development with an emphasis on both innovative policies and the tactical economic benefits of implementing smart growth principles.

Regionalism:
Jerry Paytas is an expert on regionalism who will present examples of best practices in regional collaboration. His rare combination of humor, academic rigor and wealth of experience in regional case studies will give attendees a good laugh and offer great insight into handling regional decision-making and other consensus-building situations all economic developers face.
